Tanaka came to stay at an inn in the mountains.
Before going to his room, he decided to rest in the lobby for a while. Outside the window, he could see a beautiful garden.
An old notebook lay on the table. It was a guest register containing the names of people who had stayed at the inn long ago.
As Tanaka turned the pages, he found a name he recognized.
“Ichiro Tanaka… That’s the same name as Grandpa.”
He checked the date. It was spring, forty years ago. Beside the name was the address of the house where his grandfather used to live.
“It really is Grandpa. But why was he here…?”
Just then, the owner of the inn came over.
“Did you find something?”
“My grandfather’s name is here. I had no idea he had stayed at this inn.”
The owner looked at the guest register and thought for a moment.
“Mr. Ichiro Tanaka… Ah, I remember him. He was very good at taking photographs.”
“Yes! Even now, my grandfather takes his camera wherever he goes.”
“I see. Please wait here a moment.”
The owner went to a room in the back and returned with an old photo album.
“Please look at this photograph.”
In the photograph, his grandfather was young and standing in front of the garden. A camera hung around his neck. A small boy stood beside him.
“This child is me.”
“Oh! That’s you?”
“Yes. Your grandfather taught me how to use a camera. My father took this photograph afterward.”
Tanaka looked back and forth between the photograph and the garden outside the window.
The pond and the large rock were still in the same places. But the little tree in the photograph had now grown taller than the roof.
“This tree has really grown, hasn’t it?”
“It’s been forty years, after all. I’ve certainly grown up too.”
They both laughed.
“I’d like to show my grandfather this photograph too. May I take a picture of it with my smartphone?”
“Of course.”
After taking a picture of the old photograph, Tanaka went out into the garden. Then he stood in the spot where his grandfather had stood.
“Could you take a photograph of me in the same place too?”
“Of course. Now, please smile.”
The owner took a photograph of Tanaka with the smartphone.
When he returned to his room, Tanaka sent the two photographs to his grandfather. His phone rang almost immediately.
“You’re at that inn! That brings back memories.”
“Yes. The boy standing next to you is the owner of the inn now. He remembered you, Grandpa.”
“Really? That little boy…”
His grandfather was quiet for a moment, then said happily,
“I’d love to see that garden once more.”
“Then let’s come here together next time.”
“Yes. I’ll have to bring my camera.”
Tanaka looked at the two photographs once more.
In the next photograph taken here, he and his grandfather would be together.
The thought made him look forward to his next trip.
