Tanaka was staying at an old inn in the mountains.
After bathing in the hot spring and eating a delicious dinner, he decided to go to bed early.
In the middle of the night, a small sound woke Tanaka.
Pat, pat, pat…
It sounded as though someone was walking down the hallway.
He looked at the clock. It was midnight.
“Who could it be at this hour?”
The footsteps gradually came closer, and then he could no longer hear them.
Tanaka waited for a while. But he couldn’t hear anything.
Curious, he opened the door a little. The hallway was quiet, and no one was there.
“That’s strange. I’m sure I heard something…”
Just then, he heard the sound again.
Pat, pat…
It was coming from the far end of the hallway.
“Could it be… a ghost?”
Tanaka began to feel a little frightened. Just as he hurried to close the door, he heard a voice.
“Good evening. Are you still awake?”
An elderly man with white hair appeared around the corner of the hallway. He was holding a can of tea.
“Oh… good evening. Were you the one walking around just now?”
“Yes. I couldn’t get to sleep, so I went to buy some tea. But I didn’t know where the vending machine was, so I was looking all over for it.”
Tanaka smiled with relief.
“I could only hear footsteps, so I thought it might be a ghost.”
“A ghost? I’m sorry about that.”
The elderly man laughed too.
“Would you like to have some tea?”
Tanaka bought some tea too, and the two of them sat on chairs by the window.
“Have you stayed at this inn before?”
“Yes. When I was young, I often came here with my wife. But this is my first time coming alone.”
“And where is your wife today?”
“She’s at home. She says going out with her friends is more fun.”
They looked at each other and laughed, trying not to make a sound.
Then they talked about places they had visited and their favorite hot springs. Tanaka slowly drank his tea as he listened to the man’s stories.
Before he knew it, a whole thirty minutes had passed.
“Shall we head to bed?”
“Yes, let’s. I really enjoyed talking with you.”
As they walked down the hallway back to their rooms, the sound came again.
Pat, pat, pat…
This time, it was the sound of their slippers.
Tanaka wasn’t the least bit frightened anymore.
